Look At The Birds

August 3, 2017

The invitation from a friend to come for coffee was anticipated with great joy. During a previous brief visit, I had caught sight of her outside room and looked forward to returning and sitting with her. She is a gentle-spirited woman full of peace and quiet. The outdoor room portrayed her character. It was carefully planned with everything in place. Inviting seats were under the pergola surrounded by beautiful landscaping. Bird Feeders were strategically placed and obviously filled with the bird’s favorite seed.

As we drank coffee and ate home-baked muffins, sweet conversation quickly began. It felt like a taste of heaven. Nothing else mattered for the moment. The cool breeze on this summer morning felt like the Spirit blowing new life into our hearts. It was a Sabbath moment.

The world stopped.

Two friends fellowshipped.

God came close and “touched our hearts”.

I was extremely distracted by all the birds enjoying the morning breeze along with us and banqueting upon the feast provided for them. The activity surrounding us was like a movie unfolding in front of me. I watched as they flitted from one feeder to another as if there was a competition going on. I attempted to keep my attention bent toward our conversation, but I was fascinated and didn’t want to miss a scene.

Matthew 6:25-34 sprang to life in front of my eyes.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,

 what you will eat or drink;

or about your body, what you will wear.

Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns,

and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Are you not much more valuable than they?

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

A much-needed reminder that God graciously provides everything that I need. I was overtaken with the peace and joy of resting in His provision. Everything that I need is taken care of. Worrying about the unknown is a waste of time. I too can live like the birds, partaking of all that He has provided for me, casting all my cares on Him, knowing that the next day will hold everything that I need for that day.

He provides; I feed upon His provision.

I left my friend’s house refreshed and renewed. Deeply touched by His presence, her love and generosity, the prayers we whispered, the praises we lifted. He spoke to us that He is our Provider and we can trust Him. It was a beautiful day full of peace, grace and love.

How about you?

Are you heavy burdened with the cares of life? Are you dwelling on how the situation may turn out? Are you stressed about the provisions of life? Does the decision seem bigger than Him?

Pause! Consider the birds. Sit a minute and let His peace blow over you as you enjoy His provision.
