Changing Seasons

“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

Isaiah 43:19

I had walked my street three days in a row, but had not noticed all the tender green shoots popping out of the ground. It was my friend that pointed them out and we giggled with what it meant. The shoots are young and tender, but full of promise. Very soon the weather will be warm and everything will be in full, beautiful bloom.

Today as I walked and worshiped I spotted it. The first daffodil was standing tall and proud. It’s brilliant yellow color seemed to announce, “spring is on the way.” It is only February so I know there is more winter to come.

I squatted down low to take a closer look and snap a quick photo. I was surprised by the holy moment I was caught up in. That single yellow flower was full of hope, even though everything else around it shouted winter.

Changing seasons always fascinate me--especially winter to spring. Everything appears to be dead with no signs of life, but I know a different story. I know that life is flowing under the dark ground, and sap is pumping within the tree, and all of the stick like bushes actually are full of life. I know that hidden beneath the dead leaves is a miracle in the making. It happens every year and I know that this year will be no different.

What do you know to be true?

Sometimes in the dead of winter you just need a sign of hope that a new day is coming. The darkness can snatch what you know to be true. But one little daffodil can awaken your hope and belief in the things that you know to be true. The promises of God feel like that daffodil to me. My eyes may see death, cold, dark and despair, but my hope is in the unseen. I hold on to the promises of God knowing that a new day is coming. Seasons don’t last forever. It can catch you off guard in the middle of an ordinary day. There will be the new life bursting forth.

“Things that are seen don’t last forever, but things that are not seen are eternal. That’s why we keep our minds on the things that cannot be seen.”

2 Corinthians 4:18 (CEV)

Let’s go pick some daffodil promises!
